About Us
Currently we have a mixed team of 8 athletes ages 9 -25. We practice weekly at Rostravor Ice Garden in Belle Vernon, PA. Typically each of us travel about 1 hour to get to practice due to the vast geographic location of our players spread throughout the Pittsburgh area.
Rules
History & Background
A Blind Ice Hockey team in Pittsburgh has been in existence since 2016. The start of the 2019 – 2020 season the team underwent a change in management and branding. The coach and players remain the same as they were under the previous management. It was a smooth transition since the new management has been involved since the inception of blind hockey in Pittsburgh.
Our organization aims to help visually impaired athletes play ice hockey. Open to individuals of all ages, ability levels, and levels of vision impairment, we strive to provide athletes with the necessary skills and resources to participate in blind ice hockey.
Blind Ice Hockey in Canada has been in existence for 40 plus years. Most United States teams have been in existence for just 5 years. Currently there are 19 teams in the US.
We aim to continue to grow the sport on a local level. By providing the best opportunity for visual impaired athletes to play blind ice hockey.
The majority of the Rhinos athletes are under the age of 18. Our athletes all aspire to play for the US National team one day in hopes of being able to compete in the Paralympics. The United States and Canada have been working to make blind ice hockey part of the Paralympics as early as 2026.
Pittsburgh Blind Hockey has been on the forefront of blind hockey in the United States. For the Rhinos, it has become more than just a sport to them, it is a sense of family and togetherness. Currently, we have the youngest team collectively in North America. The players have found a sense of belonging being with other individuals with the same disability. We have players from all different socioeconomic backgrounds. We provide an equal opportunity setting for all visually impaired athletes. The only requirement is you want to play hockey.
